Why You Should Consider Botox to the Masseter Muscles

Have you ever noticed yourself clenching your jaw during stressful situations? Maybe youwake up with a sore jaw, experience headaches, or find yourself massaging your jaw at theend of the day because it feels constantly tight. I found myself doing all three of thesethings on almost a daily basis and decided that somehow, I had to make a change. I dugaround and found Botox and how, when used on the masseter muscles, it can be aneffective treatment option.
The masseter is a large muscle located along the side of the jaw that is responsible forhelping us chew. When you frequently clench or grind your teeth, these muscles canbecome overactive and enlarged, potentially contributing to jaw pain, tension, andtightness.
Plus, in addition to potentially helping with muscle-related jaw pain and tension, masseterBotox can also slim the face. Since the masseter muscles can become enlarged fromchronic clenching or grinding, relaxing the muscles may gradually make the lower faceappear narrower.
Why I Decided to Try Masseter Botox
Having worked in the ICU, I noticed that I would frequently clench my jaw during stressfulsituations. By the end of the day, I would have such intense tightness that I just couldn’tseem to get relief. By the next day of work, I was starting the cycle all over again.I tried several things at home to help relieve the tension, but nothing provided the lastingeffect that I was looking for. That’s when I started considering Botox to the massetermuscles.
I met with Nicole Kenyon, P.A., who not only has a great deal of experience with injections, but also assists Dr. Capraro in surgery, where she gets to see the muscles responsible formany of our facial movements firsthand. Having that level of knowledge and experiencemade me feel very comfortable moving forward with treatment.
What Was the Appointment Like?
The actual appointment was surprisingly easy.
I met with Nicole, my injector, and we discussed my concerns and what I hoped to achieve. My primary goal was simple: relief from my extreme jaw tension.
She assessed the size and strength of my masseter muscles by having me clench and relaxmy jaw several times. She then marked the areas where she planned to inject whileexplaining why she chose each location. I learned during my appointment that theinjections are performed at different depths to adequately target the masseter muscle.
During the treatment, I was given a couple of different tools to hold to distract my painnerves. All in all, the entire process was quick, and I was able to return to work afterward.
I didn’t experience any significant swelling, and bruising was minimal. I had just a tinypinpoint bruise where one of the injections was placed. I also didn’t notice any increase injaw discomfort or tightness following the injections.
When Did I Notice a Difference?
The results weren’t immediate; a standard for all neuromodulator treatments.
It took a couple of weeks before I started noticing a difference in the tightness of my jaw. Atabout 2½ weeks after my appointment, I realized that I wasn’t feeling the same need tomassage my jaw when I got home at the end of the day.
Over time, the improvement became even more noticeable.
Eventually, I felt relief from the intense jaw tightness that sometimes kept me awake atnight. That, for me, was the biggest benefit of the treatment.
And then there was an unexpected bonus…
I noticed that my lower face looked a little slimmer.
Facial slimming wasn’t the reason I decided to get masseter Botox, but I certainly wasn’t going to complain!
Would I Do It Again?
Absolutely.
For me, masseter Botox made a noticeable difference in the jaw tension I had been dealingwith for quite some time. I went from constantly feeling the need to massage my jaw at theend of the day to finally feeling like those muscles could finally relax.
If you experience persistent jaw tightness related to clenching or grinding, masseter Botoxmay be an option worth discussing with a qualified medical professional.
Of course, everyone’s experience is different, and Botox isn’t appropriate for every cause ofjaw pain. Personally, it was a simple treatment that provided the relief I had been lookingfor for years.
And honestly, the slightly slimmer jawline was a pretty nice bonus.
